Blue Ribbon Story
Over the past decade, the blue ribbon has become widely recognized as a
national symbol of child abuse awareness and prevention. This movement began
in 1989, when Bonnie Finney, a compassionate grandmother from Virginia, took
a public stand against child maltreatment after her grandson died tragically as a
result of physical abuse. Bonnie tied a blue ribbon on her van as a symbol of her
commitment to reach out and get others involved in preventing child abuse. Why
the color blue? When children are physically abused, they often suffer bruises as
a result..…. bruises are initially black, and then eventually, they turn blue. Thus,
the blue ribbon serves as a visible reminder that we need to nurture our children
and prevent them from being abused and bruised.
The spirit of the blue ribbon has grown, and has inspired efforts nationwide to
promote awareness and understanding about the importance preventing child
abuse and neglect. It serves as a symbol, unifying caring Americans in all 50
states.
